Abu Bakr Shah

Abu Bakr Shah
(?-1390)
Abu Bakr was a grandson of Firuz Shah Tughlaq and figured prominently in the contest for the throne after the sultan's death in 1388. He occupied the throne in 1389 after putting to death Firuz Shah's immediate successor, Ghiyas al-Din. In this coup d'etat, Abu Bakr had the support of the large body of his grandfather's slaves present at Delhi. He was soon challenged by his uncle Muhammad Shah, who enjoyed wide support among the nobles and local chiefs outside Delhi. In 1390, Abu Bakr was finally driven away toward Alwar, where he died before the end of the year.
